Hope for Those Living with Diabetes Through Keto

I’m currently in Costa Rica for day 2 of production for the Reversed 2 docuseries. The program focuses on using a keto diet approach to reverse diabetes. The program is a follow-up to the original show produced and directed by Charles Mattocks. Charles doesn’t just serve in this role, he has been able to address his own Type 2 diabetes successfully and is in remission from the disease.

Charles has assembled a team of experts to help three guests learn how to use keto to address their health and improve the quality of their lives. I’m serving as the behavioral health counselor. I’ve been working with the guests in both a one-on-one capacity as well as in a group setting. The rationale is that by implementing a mental and emotional health component in a person’s nutritional plan, the individual will be empowered to make their own choices, and in turn, take over the driver seat in their healthcare.

In addition, there’s Dr. Ken Berry, a Board Certified Physician who low-carb/ketogenic/carnivore diets, intermittent fasting, thyroid health, and hormone optimization, as well as other areas. He has a very no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach to health and speaks out about how the American health system actually does more to negatively impact people’s health as opposed to improving it. His philosophy involves educating oneself and taking control of your life and not simply blindly following medical treatment that may be counterproductive. He and I have already had many conversations about my own physical health condition and I realize that I have some work to do. His YouTube channel has had millions of views.

And then there’s Dr. Lori Shemek who is a well known as a pioneer in creating global awareness of low-level inflammation and how it is the underlying cause of most illness, disease, faster aging and weight gain. She has been sending out the message about inflammation long before it was a buzz word. Dr. Shemek is an award-winning, bestselling author of How To Fight FATflammation!; The Ketogenic Key; Beginner’s Guide to Intermittent Fasting andFire-Up Your Fat Burn!

Also, there are other supporting experts, including Dr. Donald Vega, the creator of Kilosophy, a Costa Rican-based keto-focused program, Maria Emmerich, an author of 16 keto cookbooks whose website, Keto Adapted: Maria Mind, Body, Health, is keto lovers paradise, Gemma Kochis and Dorian Greenow, the husband and wife team behind the keto management system KetoMojo, Dr. Jason Fung, the co-founder of the Fasting Method, and Lisa Davis, MPH, podcast host and author of Clean Eating, Dirty Sex, and Dr. Delfin Barquero, a Costa Rican dentist who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at 35 and who will share his experience about reversing his condition and speak about the effect of diabetes on oral health.

The three guests, Lisa, Jerome, and Jannet, are individuals who have each been affected by diabetes in a variety of ways to varying degrees. They each bring their own unique perspectives, challenges, and hopes. In my conversations with them thus far, I have seen how their emotional health plays a part in the healing process. Every one of them has their own unique set of self-care tools to help them both cope with their condition as well as provide them with the strength to persevere through the adversity they’ve each had to face. They are all so courageous to be willing to open up and be vulnerable in front of a national TV audience. I’m looking forward to continuing to work with each of them and delve deeper into the life experiences that brought them here and how their lives will be transformed in the coming week.

It’s quite fascinating to be a part of this production and to see how much work Charles and his production crew are putting into the project. It is a very detailed process with a lot of moving parts that requires constant oversight and the ability to be flexible in the moment. When you see the final product, just know that it was truly a team effort.

The primary message to be learned from Reversed 2 is that it is never too late to develop healthy habits which can be transformed into long-lasting change. And while this docuseries focuses on diabetes, it is so relatable in regards to the human stories that we all have experienced, whether it be in our own lives or that of someone we care for. Reversed 2 will reach millions to educate, inspire, and provide hope to those who may believe that they face an incurable disease.

Reversed 2 is scheduled to air in September on the Discovery Life Channel
